In 2009, the Bantin family sold on the company due to ill health and it was quickly snatched up by US-based Marshall BioResources. Existing kennels and breeding units have since remained empty, however a proposed development is set to change this if granted the go-ahead.
If given planning permission, all buildings on site will be demolished and an intensive breeding facility constructed paving the way to Europe's largest site of this kind. Over 2,000 beagles are set to be held at any given site for the sole purpose of sale to experimental laboratories.
Four intensive breeding sheds are proposed for the factory farming of dogs, with no access to outdoor runs and minimal stimulation to be provided. Already functioning facilities of this nature in the UK have been exposed for animal cruelty and Marshall BioResources have far from a clean slate when it comes to the treatment of man's best friend:
Inspection reports from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) have revealed regulatory breaches at Marshall's HQ in New York. Repeated violations were documented over multiple visits, including filthy conditions, unsatisfactory housing and rodent infestation.
In September 2011, the Italian Police raided Marshall's facility in Montichiari amid being presented with evidence of animal cruelty. Multiple legislatory breaches resulted in the site's license to breed dogs for experimentation being revoked and many high-profile politicians calling for the permanent closure of the kennels. Dogs were found to be ill, housed in faeces covered units and a large number found dead in freezers under suspicious circumstances.
A NAVA investigation in 2011 revealed Marshall BioResources supplying dogs to US laboratories to test products already available on the market, gastric bands and pointlessly killed to research pet foods.
Home Office reports reveal that 86% of dogs used in British laboratories are used in toxicology experiments to tests substances such as weed killers, pesticides and paints. The other 14% compromises of academic studies, involving basic research methods and have been condemned by leading scientists as pointless and innacurate. For the latter experiments, conclusive results were already in the public domain from previous studies and alternative methods of research available involving no use of animals.
This facility must not be allowed to go ahead! Only with your help can we stop a single brick from ever being laid and this battery farm for beagles being constructed. Get involved today and help stop the Grimston beagle farm!
